Warning: I'm about to talk about how awesome my boyfriend is, so if that doesn't interest you, feel free to skip down to the pics. Michael is pretty phenomenal at giving gifts. He's not always great at keeping them a secret, but he really knows how to spoil me. This year, among other things, he surprised me with a sweet new lens for the camera he bought me last Christmas. He's really supportive of my growing passion for photography--he even signed me up for a class/workshop back in September.

I was really inspired by that workshop, but got busy with life and forgot to use the tips/tricks I learned that day. In an effort to regularly practice those things, and get to know my new lens, I decided to start weekly(ish) posts by taking more photographs on weekends. I took pics the last two weekends, but didn't get around to posting them. So I'm playing catch-up tonight. I know myself, and this definitely won't happen every week (hence the "ish" above), but it's resolution time, so most likely I'll stick with this until mid February when it starts to fade out. Just kidding. (I hope...) :)

This was a really long day. Long enough that I considered putting multiple "L's" in that really. It's not the first time I've worked both jobs on a 10 on 10 day but definitely the first that started at 2am and is ending at 11pm. Honestly though, no complaints. Aside from the initial scare at Christina's puncture wound (which turned out to be an easy fix, by the way), the day was great. Productive, good conversations, and a fantastic dinner with a friend. But as you can see below, my bed is waiting for me and I'm pretty excited about it. Happy 10 on 10 world!

Just a little Instagram peek at my Christmas decor around Minihouse (which is what I lovingly call the cottage I moved into at the end of October). Isn't the snowman fridge awesome? My grandma actually sent it to my five year old niece, but they have a stainless steel/non-magnetic fridge, so I lucked out and claimed it as my own.

My brothers and their families are with the in-laws this year, so we had our Hoffman Family Christmas last night. And with Christmas music playing in the office today, I think I finally feels like Santa's coming. ;) But before he does I wanted to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

I'm a little obsessed...

I'm really behind on my blog reading (and blog posting, and, well, life in general to be honest--it's been a busy couple of months, and my laundry pile is huge). So for those of you that read the same blogs that I do, you may have seen this in the beginning of the month, but I just discovered this gem a couple of hours ago. And have already watched it SEVERAL times (and the making of video once).

I love me some stop motion. And jelly beans. And I may or may not have a soft spot in my heart for sweet singer-songwriter tunes (as long as they aren't to sappy).

This obsession is reminiscent of when Elizabeth first emailed me a link to this video:

Which is awesome in a completely different way. "Call Your Girlfriend" quickly became a summer anthem/dance party break for Bethany's office staff and is still what we turn to when someone needs a pick me up.

Pumpkin Patch

I'm loving this October tradition with the Trudelles. Breakfast at one of my favorite restaurants, followed by searching for the perfect pumpkin (which, by the way, none of us found this year). Even though we left empty handed, it was still a fun way to spend a Saturday morning!

Later that night Michael and I stopped by Gasworks while on our way to Ballard to run some errands. Seattle is pretty awesome.

I work with some really talented people, who have been nice enough to explain some of the things mentioned in the video to me. A year ago, I had no idea what most of these terms were.

I usually love 10 on 10 days. It's fun and an excuse to carry my camera around with me wherever I go. My coworkers have even started to remind me when the 10th is coming up (which is really sweet). But this wasn't one of those fun days. I was emotional, irritable and insecure. But in that low, the meaning behind this project finally sunk in. I think seeking out beauty is always a good idea. Maybe even more so on the tough days.

A few other random things: Dubliner cheese is amazing, if you are missing your Bible check with your church (these are only the Bibles from lost and found that have names in them), also my lunch was much more glamorous than the uncooked Tap Ramen noodles and Klondike bar I had for dinner. I just didn't want you to get the wrong impression about my eating habits. :)

Homemade Goodness

This just in: I love to cook. I've always loved to bake, but cooking is a different story. Historically I've thought of it as a hassle/giant inconvenience (a bowl of cereal is just so darn easy). But the more time I spend in the kitchen, the more I enjoy the whole process. Just this week, I even (gasp!) experimented and combined/put my own twist on a couple of Mexican lasagna recipes! And even more amazing than that, I actually found the whole process relaxing. See Mom, I told you I'd grow up someday!

Here are a few of my favorite recipes that I tried last month:

CROUTONS: I had no idea they were so easy!
SPINACH & RICOTTA TACOS: These are so simple, healthy and unexpectedly delicious. At least for me. When I found the recipe, they sounded interesting but I wasn't convinced that I'd love 'em. Turns out I do. Enough to cook them twice in one week.
SOUR CREAM COFFEE CAKE: A-mazing. As is Elizabeth's blog. You should check it out. And then promptly make this coffee cake. Trust.

I have always wanted to donate my hair, and on Saturday morning I finally crossed it off my to-do list. I've been within inches a couple of times, but lost patience, and ended up talking myself out of it. I have incredibly thin/unfortunately fine hair, so I know my 13 inch ponytail won't go far, but I'm also working thinking more positively, and would like to believe that every little bit helps. Either way, I'm glad I finally did it. And I'm happy with my tiny ponytail. :)

Banana Bread

There is a very small sliver of time in the life cycle of a banana when I actually enjoy eating it. Let's just say, once there are spots, it's all over. But I also hate to waste food, so I try to only buy three or four at a time, and only if I know I'm going to eat them every morning (which of course, largely depends on my current cereal selection). So yes, when you see that lonely banana at the grocery store next to it's friends that are all hanging out in groups of six or seven, and think to yourself, who would do that and why didn't they just take the last one in the bunch? That's me. I do that. I just really don't want to take more than I need.

So, you thought I was going to talk about banana bread, right? Not just my shopping habits? Ok, well, I'm getting there. So long story short, even though I try to be mindful of purchasing only the amount of bananas that will be eaten right away, I still sometimes end up with ones that look like this...

And I always have the best of intentions with baking banana bread. I often think I don't even need to put the bananas into the freezer, "since I'm just going to make the bread tomorrow." But then tomorrow turns into a few months down the road, and all of a sudden I have quite the collection of brown bananas squeezed in between the Fudgcicles and frozen veggies in my freezer (to be fair the picture above is a group effort and combines my stash with my roommate's).

There were a couple factors that led to the actual baking process this time around...1) our freezer was getting really full, and 2) my tub of yogurt was about to expire. If you couldn't already tell, I have a lot to learn about meal planning. So, I found this recipe online, and out came this:

By far, my favorite banana bread recipe. I've tried ones with more whole wheat flour and they just turn out too dry. But this one was just the right amount of doughy deliciousness. Though I do recommend adding a little extra banana.

My Last Weekend Away in May

Yes, I meant for that to rhyme.

For someone who loves to-do lists but also loves to do nothing, being out of town for three out of four weekends in a month was a bit much for me. But at the same time, absolutely a hundred percent worth it (see here, here and here).

This trip was nice because it also included Michael. With our crazy schedules, we really only get to see each other on weekends, and I was gone for two of the weekends before this trip, so you do the math.

We made the trek across the state for a friend's wedding, but the added bonus of the weekend was hanging out with Michael's brother and sister-in-law, who also call Spokane home.

(non-wedding) Highlights:

- Stocking up on caffeine and Sun Chips (our go-to road trip snack) before heading across the length of I-90 in Washington

- Eating at Huckleberry's. This was very nostalgic for me, as our soccer bus would always stop here on our way out of town from Whitworth games. Also, Michael ordered some apple juice from their juice bar and wow, literally the best apple juice I've ever had.

- Accidentally discovering Cliff Drive on our way to Huckleberry's. Beautiful views of the not always beautiful Spokane.

- Brunch at Chaps. Apparently it was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Super cute, and decorated with tons of antique and vintage items. And most importantly, it was delicious. My blueberry muffin french toast was phenomenal. Josh and Greta, thank you so much for introducing us! (tons of pictures below)

- Dreaming up future road trip plans on our drive home.

- Finding treasures at the Thorp Fruit & Antique Mall.

Kara and Rick's Wedding!

Kara (my wonderful, witty, Whitman friend) married her med-school sweetheart, Rick, in her hometown of Spokane a couple Saturdays ago (05.21.11). It was a beautiful wedding and a super fun reception/dance party. It was so great to see old friends and finally meet Rick. Congratulations you two!

And yes, that was a hula hoop contest during the reception. Amazing.

Another Weekend Away

Last weekend, I spent some time in Long Beach, WA (did you know it's the longest beach in the world?) celebrating Ms. Kinley Campbell and her upcoming nuptials with some of my favorite Whitties. I hate that I live miles away from most of these people, and rarely get to see them. But I love that no matter how long it's been, our friendship doesn't skip a beat and we pick up right where we left off. It was a wonderful weekend, great to get away, catch up, and try on some ridiculous hats (see below). I'm so excited for Kinley and Drew. They are an amazing couple and I can't wait for July!

My weekend tour of Washington continued this weekend, with a trip to Spokane to see another Whitman friend get married. Pics to come!

A Weekend Away

I spent last weekend at Bethany's Women's Retreat across the mountains in the beautiful, Bavarian town of Leavenworth, Washington. I was honestly a little apprehensive about attending, but I kept feeling a little nudge from God telling me I should go. And I'm honestly glad I did. It was a great opportunity to get a away and get to know some of the amazing women I'm surrounded by on Sundays, and put faces to the names I'm constantly emailing about classes, service times and room availability.

I think I was scared for a few reasons. First, I had never been to a retreat before. Being new(ish) to this Christian walk, and having never gone to summer camp (from what I hear they're fairly similar), I wasn't quite sure what to expect. And I will admit, I can be pretty intimidated by the unknown. Second, I didn't really know anyone else who was going. Which, for an introvert can be exhausting to even think about. Third, I was afraid that spending the weekend at a work sponsored event would make me feel like I was at work. And darn it, I wanted a retreat from that.

But I'm slowly learning that God has a funny way of providing, and blessing me while pushing me outside of my comfort zone. This weekend He gave me a mini, grown up version of summer camp. It wasn't quite the Bug Juice experience I've always wanted, but I did sleep on the floor in my sleeping bag in a room with five other girls, we did stay up late talking about boys, and there were moments of slight panic about who to sit with at breakfast and lunch (yes, I am 27 going on 12). This weekend I was also given the opportunity make new friends and build stronger relationships with ones I had previously only known on the surface. And thankfully, it only felt like work for the first 10 minutes.

It hasn't been a great week so far, but it has been fun to think back on the weekend, and those encouraging moments of connection with friends and with Christ. I'm so grateful that I got to know God a little better. To dig into His word and to have someone smarter than I am explain it to me. To spend time in prayer and share questions and concerns with a group of women not only willing, but eager to hear my story. It's nice to not feel alone, which reminds me a quote printed on a packet of seeds we were given by the leaders of the retreat:

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: "What! You too? I thought I was the only one."

Especially in moments of frustration and sadness, it's helpful for me to remember that I am not alone, in more ways than one.

Across the Pond

"What was your favorite part of London?"

I can't even tell you how many times I've been asked some variation of that question this week. And I have yet to come up with a good answer. Embarrassing, right? Because the truth is, I loved it all. Damian, Jen and Cassidy were fantastic hosts and Michael and I had so much fun hanging out with them and exploring England.

A few of the many highlights:

Getting a giant hug from Cassidy when we picked her up from school after arriving from the airport.
Getting to know the Tube. I loved how easy it was to get around the city. I'm going to miss riding the District Line back to Wimbledon ("where this train terminates") at the end of every day.
Dinner with the London Hoffmans every night. We were spoiled with the meals...delicious salmon, Jen's amazing homemade meat pie (pictured below), Damian's famous marinated steak (I told you it was good, Michael!). But even better than the food was spending time with my family, and recounting our days/listening to Damian discuss Star Wars over a meal and a glass of wine. Something I've missed being able to do since they moved to London a year and a half ago.
Getting to spend 10 days straight with Michael. Our schedules are so busy at home that we only get to see each other on weekends, so that was a nice change of pace, however brief.
Flying over the Arctic Circle/Northern Canada on the way home from our stopover in Iceland. Breathtaking. I took pictures but they didn't capture the awesomeness.

Cupcake Craze!

In two weeks, I have made four different kinds of cupcakes. Overkill? Nah. Well, maybe to my waistline. I've just been feeling festive and there have been so many reasons to celebrate. I mean Valentine's Day screams heart shaped cupcakes, right? And from what I hear, two kinds of cupcakes are required at game nights. And a birthday? Yeah, that may be my only legitimate reason to make cupcakes.

Top left: Reece's cupcakes. White cake with chopped up Reece's Peanut Butter Cups (or just buy the mini ones) with white frosting mixed with a couple tablespoons of Creamy JIF.
Top right: Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. Chocolate cake with chocolate chips in the batter with chocolate frosting, rolled in a bowl of mini chocolate chips.
Bottom left: Cookies and cream. Chocolate cake with a Double Stuff Oreo in the middle. Then crumbled Oreos mixed with white frosting. The trick with these is to put a little bit of batter in the bottom of the cup, add an Oreo and then cover it with more batter. The Oreo softens a little during baking but adds a nice bit of crunch to the cupcake experience.

*The sprinkles and kit used to frost the lemon cupcakes were bought here. Home Cake is amazing. About a month ago I was looking for a flour sifter and the owner of the Seattle Restaurant Store recommended checking out Home Cake if I was getting into baking. I think he said something along the lines of "it's a bit chaotic, but totally worth it." And it is. I am a novice baker and I hate messy (which it is), but I love it there. It's a one woman show. She like a baking Wonder Woman. Both times I've been there the store has been packed but she managed to magically ring everyone up, answer the phone, dispense sage advice and upsell everyone. But she was right, those disposable pastry bags have already come in handy. But seriously, you should go there.

January Weekends

January was the first month in years that I have had consecutive work free weekends. While I miss all my homies at Store 197, I can't even explain how much I have loved regaining my Saturdays and Sundays. This month, I had a great time hanging out with friends and family and exploring my new(ish) neighborhood. Here are some of my favorite shots from my weekend adventures:

01.01: New Years Day walk to Green Lake Bar & Grill for some much needed nourishment. And some family time by the fire.

01.08: Last minute hang outs and a Seahawk Saturday before the London Hoffmans left us for...well...London.

01.11: Random Tuesday snow day. Not a weekend, I know, I just love this picture.

01.16: Game night, and a walk to 45th for some supplies.

01.17: MLK Day with two of my favorite people, drinking great coffee and treasure hunting at an antique mall in South Seattle.

01.22: Glassybaby seconds sale. Thank you Michelle for getting me out of bed and letting me cut in line. Thank you Grandma for giving me money for Christmas and unknowingly buying me two of these.

01.28: Date night with my man! If you are ever around Lake City and 80th, go to Chiang's Gourmet and order the homemade Shanghai style noodles. Elizabeth gave me this advice, and I feel it is only right to pass it onto you. And yes, we had a ton of leftovers.

01.29: Quality time with my momma. My dad has been working crazy hours, so I was able to steal my mom on Saturday. My dad took a break from work to join us for lunch, but the rest of the day we pretty much just hung out, drank some coffee and ran a few errands.

Goals for February weekends: sleep in, schedule some friend time, walk around Green Lake more, and spend less. :)

A Very Hoffman Christmas

Michael surprised and spoiled me this Christmas with a camera I've had my eye on for quite some time (isn't he dreamy?). He gave it to me on Christmas Eve, which we celebrated with his family. Which means I spent most of Christmas day staring through the viewfinder of my new Canon Rebel T1i. Here is a glimpse of Christmas 2010 at the Hoffman house...

It was a wonderful Christmas. I'm so glad I was able to spend time with my family, nap in front of the fireplace, and take way too many pictures. I am truly blessed. Merry (belated) Christmas everyone!

Happy happy birthday to my favorite four year old! Since you're an ocean away (and I've never been great at making it to the post office), I thought I'd use my newest medium of sharing information to tell you how fun it's been to watch you grow into the precocious princess you are.

2nd Annual P-Patch Day

I happen to thoroughly enjoy taking pictures and making lists. So it is no surprise that I chose to describe my day at the pumpkin patch with Michael, Rachel and Steve with pictures. In list form.

1. Church.
2. Coffee. A tall latte with one Raw Sugar from Neptune Coffee = perfection.

3. Wandered aimlessly through antique shops in Duvall.

4. Quick ride for the fans.

5. Late brunch at The Grange Cafe. A-mazing. Go there.

6. Pumpkin patch at Remlinger Farms.

Another great day with the Trudelles! We love you guys. And pumpkins. And good food. And treasure hunting. Also, please note that during steps 1-4, Steve was running. Yep, while we were sipping on coffee, driving from Greenlake to Duvall, and meandering around town for an hour or so, Steve was running consistent 6:20 miles. Both productive uses of a Sunday, I'd say. Good luck in New York Steve! You'll do great.
